Pressure builds up on the inner walls of blood vessels during blood flow. When that pressure exceeds the requirement, it is called 'Hypertension'. It is also called a 'silent disease/killer' as the symptoms are largely unknown.
Who can be affected?
1) If anyone has family background2) Seniority
3) obesity
4) Consume too much salt
5) Alcohol, smoking
6) mental stress
7) Diabetes, cholesterol
8) Pregnancy period
When high blood pressure goes undiagnosed for many years, it turns into chronic hypertension and starts affecting the organs. Sometimes the symptoms become apparent only after the liver, eye, heart, kidney and brain are affected.
Symptoms:
In the early stages, severe headache, dizziness, fainting, and nosebleeds may appear. Chronic high blood pressure is characterized by blurred vision, difficulty urinating, weakness, numbness in hands and feet, chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations.
Self check up:
A digital blood pressure monitor called a 'sphygmomanometer' can be purchased and checked at home. The instrument has two measurements namely `Systolic' and `Diastolic'. 'Systolic' refers to the pressure in the blood vessels during the heartbeat. 'Diastolic' refers to the pressure between heartbeats. Systolic 120 to 140, diastolic 80 to 90 is normal. If it goes above this level, it is high blood pressure. If it goes below this level, low blood pressure.
Do not perform this test on an empty stomach after exercise, after going outside, when you are nervous or angry. The correct result will be known only if the test is done while being slightly relaxed.
If high blood pressure is confirmed, tablets may be required. If you follow a healthy diet and exercise, you can reduce the dose of the pill after a certain period of time.
People who are healthy and less prone to disease can have their blood pressure checked periodically starting at age 35. People who are susceptible to the disease and have symptoms should be screened from the age of 30.
When symptoms like dizziness and fainting appear, they think it is low blood pressure and indulge in activities like adding salt and drinking buttermilk. This can further increase the already existing high blood pressure. Therefore, proper examination and treatment is necessary if symptoms are present.
Let's see about low blood pressure (Low BP) in the next post.
